Football Internationale de Football Association [FIFA] have approved World Cup expansion to 46 teams from 2026 edition onwards. Yes, FIFA is going to add 16 more football teams in the World Cup 2026 that will also increase number of games of-course. There will be new format for the competition. Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA received lots of backing during the meeting for expansion of teams.
Confirmed: 48 Football Teams From World Cup 2026
There was a tweet on twitter from FIFA Media stating that The FIFA Council unanimously decided on a 48 team #WorldCup as of 2026: 16 groups of teams. So there will be 16 groups. Each group will have 3 teams.

The President also suggested that penalty shootouts should be brought in the group games. This is to minimize the risk of teams colliding in their final group games to eliminate others from tournament.
The main motive of this expansion is to give more nations a chance of playing the biggest spot event of the World. It would be also helpful for nations who deserves to play in FIFA World Cup.
According to this format, there will be 80 matches instead of 64 which will forecast $1 billion more income from broadcasting, sponsor deals, plus ticket sales as compared to that of $5.5 billion income from 2018 FIFA World Cup.
If we take a look on current teams, then Asian and African teams are expected to increase in teams. It is not scheduled that who will host the World Cup of 2026. Stay tuned for more updates.
